Tile is mostly invisible work. What you see is the surface; what determines whether it lasts is everything underneath — the substrate, the waterproofing, the layout and the movement joints.

Tiling — common questions
What is waterproofing, and why does it matter?
It is a continuous membrane behind the tile that stops water reaching the framing. Without it, water gets into the wall cavity, and you find out years later via soft drywall, mould or a rotted subfloor. It is the single most important part of any tiled shower and the part nobody can inspect afterwards. We do it properly and we document it.
Can you tile over my existing tile?
Occasionally, where the existing tile is well bonded and the added height does not cause problems at thresholds and fixtures. More often we recommend removal, because tiling over a failing substrate just delays the failure and makes it more expensive to fix. We will tell you which applies to you.
Why do my grout lines keep cracking?
Cracked grout is nearly always movement underneath — a subfloor that flexes, or no expansion joint where the tile meets the wall. Regrouting without addressing the cause just means it cracks again. We fix the reason, not the symptom.
